Subject:WoM Commentary is a tad bit spoilery for EoT?
Posted by:doctordiehard.
Time:4:56 pm.
Hi. I just listened to the commentary with DT, RTD and JG. It's available now on iTunes (Podcasts: Doctor Who the Commentaries if you are looking for it). While they stopped themselves before going too far (ahem), I have to warn you that they still put ideas in my head. It's a little spoilery if you're paying close attention. But I enjoyed being spoiled! There was a slip near the end regarding a couple of places and an action. I put 2 and 2 together and do believe I know what happens to our unforgettable Doctor number Ten. It's a charming and entertaining commentary, but if you are trying to avoid all spoilers, no matter how tiny, you may want to skip the WoM commentary for now.

Subject:Writing For Money
Time:12:00 pm.
A person on my friendslist today asked her audience what markets they were currently writing to, what deadlines they had, etc.

And it sort of drew me up short, because a LOT of people on my friendslist are professional or semi-pro writers, or actively pursuing non-traditional methods of publication, and... I haven't tried to sell anything I've written since high school*. I haven't even tried to put out a tip jar, or donate button.

This is not because I agree with Miss Manners that it's begging. It's not because I can't write, or can't write to spec, don't have time to write, or can't follow submission directions.

I'm not even sure it has to do with a failing of confidence - I know I'm not an awful writer (Any more. I certainly was. That's another story). And 'not awful' is an awful lot better than plenty of the stuff out there that people pay good money for. I get nice comments from my forgiving audiences.

I tallied it up, out of curiosity - trying to figure out how much I've written, and what I've done with it.

Discounting the 8+ years of blogging I've done, I have written nearly 100 short stories and 35 non-fiction articles while not being a writer. With one exception*, I have been paid nothing for this work. I posted them in my Elfwood library, at various fanfiction site (YES, I have an account at fanfiction.net. I'm not proud.), here at livejournal, at my own site, at deviantart, in Woodworks (RIP), EMG-Zine, Epitome... Even if you cut fanfiction out of that total, I've freely shared 75 odd pieces of fiction and non-fiction.

That's not amazing when compared to some people on my friendslist (*looks significantly at certain members of the padded room society*...), but I've got some staying power. I'm not an awful writer. I like to write. I'm already doing the writing. I am even a self-avowed 'shameless capitalist' who has been selling her artwork since she had to have a parent counter-sign a business license.

So, why am I not trying to sell my writing? More, why am I not asking anything for what I'm already doing? Why do I find such a chasm between art and writing in my own head? Why does even thinking about this make me feel stupid and stubborn at the same time?

I don't have any answers yet, only the questions. I might have a really good reason for this somewhere in the weird mental swirl that is my own brain.

I also find it odd is that after I started drafting this entry up, I got a notice in my email about a gaming site looking for more (potentially paid) bloggers. I have no idea how they got my email, but I suspect it wasn't a personal note. Still, within a few moments, I had an idea for a gaming-type column that I could easily write a post a week on.

Universe, you have a weird sense of humor.

*I have sold one piece of non-fiction in this time, mostly by accident, because the market I was writing for changed to a paying market, paid me, and as far as I can tell, ONLY me (because nothing else was published in the interim), before going back to a non-paying market.

Romdeau is a multifandom game on LiveJournal set in the world of the anime series Ergo Proxy. There's no need to have watched the series to participate. (As a player there, I can vouch for this.) It's something of a memory loss game in which your character's memories have been wiped, and they have been reprogrammed with new ones so they believe they lived in Romdeau all their lives. As the so-believed perfect, structured city comes undone, your characters begin to see flashes of what they don't know are their real lives, the ones they were taken from to be brought here. It's a promising game, and it would love to have some more players to really get it going! Lots of characters are available, so if you weren't lucky to snag that one you really wanted to play someplace else, you're likely to have them here. Give the game a look if it's something you might be interested in. Thanks!

Hell yes, I successfully managed to talk a boy into watching Gundam Seed, now is that awesome or is that awesome? xD
I hope he likes it. xD'
I watched a bit Gundam 00 lately, or rather, finished the first arc and started the second, but somehow I always interrupt myself with watching Seed. On that note, I rediscover DeaYza-doujinshi and see why I am shipping them so much again. Aside that someone posted a scan in which they were shopping together like some couple. xD

Also, today's test was... err, how should I say? I finished it in time and had even time to read some of the stuff through, now I have no idea if I passed or not, considering the weirdest things are seen as mistakes.
101 kanji until next week, if I manage that... haha. xD'
On that note, I somehow talk/phone with my father a lot lately and I don't know, but it is kind of funny how we already plan my fail, lawl. xD'
Though I must admit... I kind of want to go... home, haha. ;;
I have a headache and a stomachache, orz, what's wrong with me lately? I didn't have stomachaches in years and now it's happening frequently.

On a YGO-note, the manga amuses me to no end. xD
First, Seto tells Jyo that part with that he admires him for his stupidness in his face, lawl, though Jyo is more busy with being shocked/pissed that Seto of all people saved him. xD
I also love how Mai apologizes to Shizuka before she bitchslaps Jyo out of his self-pity and I realized the anime screwed up again big time for letting Jyonouchi and Atemu duel in Duelist Kingdom. xD'
On a note of Bakura, I love how he comes with "ore" and nobody realizes something is off except Yuugi. The convo about his bleeding arm was... err, yeah:

Bakura: I am fine!
Jyo: F-fine you say... isn't that blood coming out there?!
Bakura: Yes, but it doesn't hurt at all. Do you want to touch it?
Jyo: Don't joke around!!! /runs away
Bakura: It's okay! Come on! /follows

That particular convo wtfed the shit out of me, but oooookay. xD
Marik's and Bakura's fake smiles are also... very interesting and when the hell did Yuugi get so suspicious? I am impressed, he isn't nearly half as gullible as in the anime. xD
Other than that, Jyo should trust his thinking more and I love how Seto assumes: tattoo face = Marik, gotcha Seto. xD

-Some more David Tennant (video!) clips from the Christian O'Connell breakfast show here! The second part of that interview, at the start, when that 11-year old boy rings in... it made me all wibbly on the radio in the first place, but when you actually see David's reaction on the video, you'll know he wasn't joking about nearly crying there. WAH. *sniffle*

-Speaking of Daves (and Johns! And Phils), more pics from the Speaking in Tongues premiere have surfaced here. They are, for the most part, cute and terrifying--not least because of Dave's hyper crazyfaces (never give this man champagne). Even John's a bit disturbed. "Um, David? You can let go of me now."

-Oh, Christ. I went to the BBC Who site and behold, PacMaster lives. (It's a cap from last night's trailer, but oh dear). Speaking of the trailer, did anyone else go FUCKING UNF over cut for the trailerphobic )

-Aaaanyway, I may come back with picspammage laterz.

Hello! [info]philosophercat here! I too will be reccing fics this week for your reading pleasure. *tips hat*

Title: Serenity's Shadow.
Author: Chryse.
Characters/Pairings: 5th Doctor, Nyssa of Traken, Tegan Jovanka, Adric.
Rating: All ages.
Warnings: None.
Word Count: 28316.
Summary: Set after the events of the novel 'Cold Fusion' and before 'Earthshock'. Nyssa decides she wants to leave the TARDIS crew and make a new life for herself on the Trakenite colony of Serenity. But little does she realise 'there's no place like home'.

Recced Because: This work in progress is a worthy sequel to the serial Keeper of Traken, a powerful story difficult to follow up on. The regular characters are pitch-perfect, those invented by the author well rounded and memorable. Each element slots in nicely, the atmosphere and pacing would fit an actual episode from its era. In addition, it is worth noting that the author avoids many of the pitfalls fan fiction writers very often have in portraying Adric. He's given the same honest treatment as the others, which is just another way of saying the author's done her work well.

Because of the previously mentioned news, I can post my entry:

I won in the art category! I'll admit to being inspired by [info]coppervale's amazing inking. My technique is nowhere near as refined as his, but I did push myself further than I may have otherwise.

Home and Health

Saturday was snow removal day - we spent a few hours outside moving snow around and clearing the driveway and turnaround. My arms still hurt.

After that was done, we put up tongue and groove siding in the stairwell until we ran out - it's about half done! Nice to have some house progress. I took before and after photos, which I'll show once we have genuine 'after' photos.

Planning

Work. Bleh. And then workout. And then... more orders. And the usual list of Things That Must Be Done. I have a post to post later about writing things.

Subject:So, The Really Big Question About Waters of Mars...
Posted by:verlaine.
Time:9:22 am.
...How does it fit into pre-existing 21st century history? Going by the timeline suggested in Tat Wood's About Time books:

c. 2030 The Enemy of the World
c. 2030 The Wheel in Space
2059 The Waters of Mars
2070 The Moonbase
2084 Warriors of the Deep

I'm not sure it *totally* makes much sense for Zoe to be from a less technologically advanced era than Adelaide and crew, but maybe there should be a statute of limitations on continuity: after over 40 years you can brush some things under the carpet :D

Posted by:dom_iciliated.
Time:12:17 pm.
It's an age of piracy like you've never seen before.

The floating continent of Reial has been divided by war and strife for hundreds of years. To the east, the refined, powerful nation of Ivona. To the west, the loose confederacy of Vohemar, formed by the struggle between Ivona and those who would not be ruled by someone from half a world away. And in between them, the Badlands mountains loom high, separating the two squabbling nations with its monster-infested peaks and deserts.

The Badlands have been the battleground for these two powers for centuries and Joseph Falls-a revolutionary to some, a rabble-rouser and troublemaker to others-has called for the Badlands to unite and toss off the yoke of both Vohemaro and Ivonian colonialism.

And underneath the surface there’s Denouement, an organization whose ends are mysterious, but whose presence has been felt across the continent. They are responsible for terrorizing the ground and air with bombs and kidnappings, the assassination for the old Ivonian president, and some suspect they might have ties to the revolutionary Falls.

Everyone is always recruiting, whether they be Vohemaro, Ivonian, Badlands or independent-or even Denouement-but do not think their motives only run skin deep. Through it all, the people of this world sail the skies, trying to survive the turbulent times. Pirates, soldiers, merchants, thieves, actors, mercenaries, mad scientists, all of them united, despite their disparate views and allegiances, in wanting something better for themselves.

Choose a ship, declare your loyalty, and fight alongside your crew to make your dreams a reality.

A new Radio Free Skaro episode!:

After seven long months, Doctor Who returned to the airwaves in high style with “The Waters of Mars,” a topper of a story and one heck of a lead-in to the Doctor’s imminent demise and resurrection. The Three Who Rule were effusive in their praise of The Waters of Mars, though somewhat less so when the conversation came to the latest episodes of the Sarah Jane Adventures, which Chris (also known as “Curmudge-or”) succinctly labeled as “poop”. The trio even discussed how Steven somehow managed to get onto UK radio last week and participate in a conference call with David Tennant. Intellectual banter and relentless name-dropping ahoy!

Time:4:53 pm.
I was walking to the mall in the middle of the afternoon, while my mom was asleep. I had a very good reason to go, but when I got there, I couldn't for the life of me remember what it was. In fact. I stood there, outside, and said out loud. "Ok, now why am I here?" An old man next to me asked me if I needed help, but my Stranger Danger alarm went off and I told him that I was fine.

I walk around the mall, trying to remember what the hell I was doing there, and there's a song stuck in my head. Salve Regina from Sister Act. Except it was going too fast, maybe 150% speed. Eventually I end up in front of Dr Lick ice cream stand. There's this woman there in Arab garb, trying to convince me to try their new Winter Ice cream, it's covered in alcoholic hot chocolate, or rum based dolce de lece. It didn't seem too appetizing to me and I politely said no thank you, but the guy behind the counter motioned me over. "I know exactly what you want." He said, and gave me a taster spoon full of green pistachio-like ice cream. It tastes like musky sweat socks. I give him the taster spoon back half full. He doesn't relent, but every flavor is horrible. Finally he relents, but then he says "If not ice cream, how about a Pita with something?" I look around and his booth is suddenly filled with meats. I look outside and suddenly it's snowing. A strange snowing, as if someone had laid a snowing backdrop but forgot how snow actually works.

I look down at my watch, it's 16:21, I'm supposed to wake my mother up at 17:00. I tell him no thank you and I start running home. Then I wake up, and my first thought it, 'Oh good, now at least I don't have to run home.'.

Hello! I'm EdgeofWorld and I will be reccing this week! I read quite a few different types of Doctor Who fics, but my favorites are Rose/Doctor pairings.
Don't worry - I won't fixate on those. I will show you all of my favorites; specifically the one's that have kept me sane living in Japan this year.
I'll apologize in advance if I rec anyone who has been recced before, I've gone pretty far back in the community to check, but there are a lot of posts in here.
Cheers.

Story: Golden Strands
Author: Humansrsuperior
Rating: All Ages
Word Count: 16000
Author's Summary: The Doctor had known that he wasn’t going to like whatever he found in this facility. He had made that prediction a long time ago. But this was beyond any twisted truth he may have been expecting.
Characters/Pairings: Rose/10th Doctor
Warnings: None

Recced because: Take one Bad Wolfish Rose, one 10th Doctor at his most doctorish; add one nefarious facility conducting experiences on unique individuals; mix well and let sit for three chapters.
I am a sucker for a good old fashioned reunion fics, and this piece delievers beautifully. I adore all of Humansrsuperior's stuff, but this piece is one of her best.
It asks the question what if; what if Rose crossed the void on her own using Bad Wolf, but landed in a hostile environment?
What I really like about this piece is the plot. It's not all a fluffy romp in the world of post reunion rainbows. It has darkness, angst, and a serious dose of adventure. The first two chapters read a lot like a Doctor Who episode. The first chapter has the 10th doctor at his manic best, the second forays a little into his darker nature (here it revolves around Rose being hurt), and it's only the third and final part where you get to the actual reunion fluff.

Her details are wonderful. She describes the muscular and emotional changes in the characters vividly. Your own body will twinge in sympathy when one of the characters get hurt. Not to mention the emotional onslaught that is usually associated with reunion fics. Oh, and she throws in a good dose of UST for good measure.
This story has the best descriptions I've read in any form of literature, hands down! Read it and you won't be disappointed.
